Newbie stuff; external FW drives

I've been shooting lots of video of my new son, and need to start 
playing with editing it.  It's still on the DV tapes.

I'm running a Powerbook G4 867.  I want to use an external firewire 
drive to handle my video.

1.  Will an external FW drive be fast enough to handle the editing? 
What sort of data transfer rates are necessary?

2.  What's the best way to get the video from the tape onto the 
external FW drive?
