Did you actually compare file sizes? I found that the AAC version was slightly larger than the MP3 version. That's because the default MP3 setting (160 kbps). The songs from the iTunes store used 128 kbps. So you would have to adjust your settings to something lower than that 128 that seems to be the default to save any space.
