For what it's worth, I've owned 3 Western Digital Firewire drives (pre-Oxford 911) that had their firewire bridge die shortly after the warranty ran out. The drives inside (5400 rpm IDEs) still work fine - one's currently in my machine internally and the others are in WiebeTech Desktop GB firewire/USB enclosures.
