FYI: System 9.0.4 is one of the buggiest worst version of 9 out there. When was the last time you ran your System Updater? You should definitely bump that puppy up as far as the updater will let you. Should be able to get to 9.2.2 on a G4 400. Much more stable and way fewer crashes. Bump it up and see if you get the same empty trash problem. My bet is you won't.
