Your man should get a $20 card reader that can read those two formats 
(as well as 3 or 4 others) and plug it into USB.  That's probably 
enough for iPhoto to wake up and grab the content, but it not, just 
open the card in finder and drag the images to the desktop.  The 
camcorder uses standard JPEG image format for stills.

He won't be able to pull still images off the mini DV tape to USB 
without the cruddy WIndows-only software.  Yet another reason to ask 
the manufacturer "What support does your product have for MacOS X?" 
before buying.
