I don't know if you have the little speed bumps showing on the
timeline. I do not. too distracting.
At any rate, If you are going to do it that way, after you select the
variable speed parameter
you could open the clip from the timeline into the viewer, go to the
motion tab and keyframe the
variable speed. I think this would give the type of effects you
describe a chance. In this context jumping to the beginning ( at least
when it actually jumps to the beginning of the selected edit) might be
of value.
