Step 1: Chill on the intoxication regarding the *idea* of free money. "Emerging Artist" doesn't mean "emerging from not being an artist an having done nothing to thinking about making a first work." They mean, "emerging into having a personal voice and into being recognized after toiling and exploring art for quite a while in obscurity with an undeveloped voice." Step 2: Make art and be willing to dump your own money into it, because if you're not, you don't care enough to emerge on any grant-maker's radar. Do this for at least...I don't know...two to five years. Step 3: Develop body of work that seems to follow a fruitful path of exploration.
