Best DVD Media Format?

What DVD media format is the most compatible with stand-alone DVD players (the kind that most people have connected to their televisions) -   DVD-R or DVD+R? 

I'm asking because I'm thinking about buying a Formac external Devideon DVD burner. They have a model for $199 that burns onto DVD-R media and one for $269 that uses DVD+R media. I want to use the media that is most compatible. It comes with authoring software and it is the only one I've seen so far that will run on either a G3 or G4 or under Mac OS 9 or X. (Not trying to sell the thing - just passing along what I've found out.) Thanks in advance.
