I've seen this "Not Permitted" message on commercial DVDs that I try to play in my Mac. It happens when the DVD is at a menu choice (such as which subtitles to use). Apparently, the disk or the player can't communicate or interpret the play button, when there are choices in some menus, on some disks. I have been able to play these disks by clicking on the round "enter" button on the right side of the player. Perhaps that will work for your disk. I just got a recommendation for another/alternative software DVD controller. I know nothing about it, except that it claims to be free. If you try it, let us know how it works.
