The compatibly has to do with the reflective characteristics of the media, the information on both types of disks is the same it is just that the older players had lasers and lenses that are not capable of reading the disks burned rather than pressed. Think of it this way if you read 12 pt type with a 100 watt light bulb it doesn't mean that you will be able to read it under a 25 watt bulb with your glasses off. The book is the same but conditions have changed enough that it cannot be read. This would be same as putting a DVD-R in a current player designed to read these disks and using an old set that isn't equipped to.
