It puts Apple in a unique situation. With every upgrade, they can adjust the processing demands of the software to just push the limits of the hardware, and of course they can perfectly time that with a subsequent new hardware release which gives you back the speed/headroom you had in the first place ... at least until the next software update. It's a win-win situation for Apple. The real coup in the last couple of years has been their strategy to create inexpensive media software geared for the masses (ie. the iLife applications). Once they have us hooked - and they do - we just have to ride that upgrade express train. And for those who grow beyond the basic software, Apple has created (or acquired) packages that compete with the cream of the professional video editing, audio/MIDI, and DVD Authoring crop.
