what to get... or rent?

Hey folks I have a bunch of VHS that I need to convert... Although I 
would prefer to edit rather than straight dump the camera I have does 
not seem to have passthrough. This leaves me with a choice of a) buy a 
cheap camera b) pay to have it transfered (almost $300 for a dump to 
DVD) or c) buy some sort of media converter.

Which makes the most sense in terms of cost/reward? Or would it make 
sense to rent something...
