They create QuickTime "reference" files that point to the DV Stream (not DVD) content in the clips. It appears, from your description, that you are leaving out the step that encodes the DV Stream into the MPEG-2 files a DVD authoring and burning program needs as input. I would strongly suggest that the easiest solution for you, since you're using a G3 with external burner, would be to invest in a copy of Toast 6 Titanium and use it. Toast includes an encoder that will do the job for you. Note that encoding to MPEG-2 is not a fast operation, and it will be even slower on your G3 hardware.
