Toast 6 Pass-through?

I am getting a little farther along on my project to transfer some VHS 
tapes to DVD's. I tried  to go from the VCR to the Canon ZR70 to 
Firewire to eMac 10.2.8. Toast 6 says to put a tape in the camera. I 
think I should be able to use the pass-through mode without making a 
separate mini dv tape.
I was able to load a 1/2 hour movie into iMovie with 4 clips but can't 
figure out the next procedure on how to save and transfer to iDVD. If 
the image is frozen on the Mac and the message says it is converting to 
digital, is this normal and is it still processing the incoming signal 
from the camera/vcr?
I appreciate any input.  I always feel I am one click away.   Nick
