At the time I checked the the need for the firmware and determined it wasn't necessary, I don't remember why, but there was a bulletin on the Apple support site. I was using the Sawtooth in both OS9 and 10 all the way from 10.0 to 10.3 and never had any problems (still have the machine active and in occasional use). I even have an old SCSI card in it, which has worked about 80% of the devices in 10. Hope this helps at least a bit.
