[MacDV] Where is MPEG4?

As I was going through another round of editing home movies for VCDs 
(MPEG1) and DVDs (MPEG2) I was left wondering whatever happened to 
MPEG4? With iMovie, I've had the ability to export to mp4, but what can 
I do with that?

I guess what I'm really wondering is if there's a way to put MPEG4 
video on a CD or DVD that can be played back on a DVD player and if 
there are any players that support MPEG4?
