stock feature of iMovie.
Highlight your photo or clip.
go to the Titles pane in iMovie.
select subtitle
or another style.
type in your caption . Where it says "My Great Movie "etc.
uncheck "over black"
then drop the little subtitle icon from the list (or whatever style you 
choose.
  onto the timeline just before the picture it goes with.
