I'm wondering if "improved derivative" is the best way to express this. Since H.264 is a part of MPEG-4, as planned for the next generation DVDs and QuickTime, and since MPEG-4 includes the opportunity to incorporate and utilize various codecs, I don't see one as a replacement for or derivative of the other.
