You might try getting hold of a maintenance utility like Cocktail or System OptimizerX ( try http://macupdate.com/utilities.php ) Then use one of these to run a "prebinding" and then fix permissions. This could really help. You could also open System profiler, read the logs and try to see why it's crashing.
