[MacDV] downloading video footage

We just bought the Canon Optura 400 and are having trouble downloading 
video footage onto our powerbook G4 running OSX.3  It seems you can 
only download from the 'card' not the 'tape'-is this true?  The card 
that comes with the camera gives you about 20 seconds of filming 
time-even if we bought a card 100 times bigger it would still be fairly 
useless.  How does anybody else deal with this? Would love to hear from 
someone.
