If you just use your REPLY function, the subject line should be the same as the original, likely with a "Re:" in front of it (which shouldn't affect the threading). Note the address you are sending to when you reply. In some cases the reply will pick up the address of the poster whose message you are replying to, or it may use the address of the e-mail list (probably what you want). Be prepared to change the address in the reply if you need to.
