Glad you managed to capture (the usual term, rather than "download") your footage to iMovie. The "letterboxing" bit concerns me however - as Aaron said it means the aspect ratio (the shape of your picture) of your iMovie project doesn't seem to be matching the footage from your camera. When you look at the iMovie window, what does it say in brackets after the title? eg My Great Movie (DV-NTSC-Widescreen) or My Great Movie (MPEG-4) etc. This would help solve the mystery.
