[MacDV] iMovie 6 Trash/Disk space problem

After having imported several hundred gigs of old family VHS video  
(with a Canopus ADVC 110 and much more to come) and having made lots  
of rough edits on scores of clips, my wife became aware of the iMovie  
6 (maybe it's in earlier versions, also) "non-destructive" editing   
feature and its resulting inability to actually trash unwanted footage.

Help.

Besides David Pogue's "title" and "re-import clip" solutions, are  
there any ways around this problem? Are we missing something?
