[MacDV] hard drive camcorder

The father of one of my students wants to get one of the new little 
cameras with a hard drive. I've recommended miniDV, but he's still 
asking about the hard drive camcorders. Most of the machines that we're 
using are the new iMac flat panels, with a couple of Quicksilvers and 
eMacs, and cutting with FCS2.

Does anyone have any experience with the quality of the image? If it's 
encoding in mpeg, does the footage capture OK, or do you have to go 
through ProRes or something?
