Carl, I have heard that for iMovie it likes firewire better than USB. May or may not be true but with my MacBook I just hook up the firewire camera to computer and then open iMovie. On the lower left of the viewing window is a button that you can click between a pair of scissors and a movie camera. Click the movie camera and your control buttons will be active. When you rewind and click the play button the movie should play in the viewing window with sound. If you want to capture as you view you click the import button.
