[MPA] iTunes Soundcheck - how does it work?

I believe it simply sets the average signal level the same for all 
songs...but I've never seen a white paper on it.

I know it doesn't compress the dynamic range...but I know a lot of 
people had some major sound quality problems with it when they upgraded 
to iTunes4.
