[MPA] soundmanager vs coreaudio - what's the difference/significance?

I'm wondering what the difference is between these two driver  
options. Are there reasons to pick one over the other?
If you are in a sound app (except, I think, QT) you can select either  
one.
I have to do a large number of digitizations of old reels, so I'd  
love to pick well.
