[MV] Quick Microphone Question

I have a friend with an Intel Mac Book Pro. He has some version of the older
headset with a mini jack. Will the Mac book pro recognizing this microphone
with just the mini jack input?

The reason I ask, is because I use a headset with a mini jack input -  but
mine is plugged into and Andrea USB adapter. This is because older ViaVoice
if required if at the time - maybe I don't need it anymore if I'm not using
ViaVoice?

- Assuming a computer had a mini jack  input - What was the purpose of
Andrea USB adapters - were they needed?
