Lots of folks have had endless problems (often problems that were very hard to trace) due to inadequate USB hubs. I recommend *only* getting an AC powered USB hub, and only getting one with a proven track record. It used to be that the Pertech Hubmaster would cure all sorts of ills that Mac users were experiencing, and which they previously could find no cure for. Sadly, Pertech went out of business.
