There are only two major Desktop platforms out there at the moment Wintel and Macintosh, and indeed the proportion of Mac's to Wintel PCs puts Mac's at less than 5% of the total market. However you should not judge one company in a market against the rest of the market as a whole you should judge it against other companies in the same market to get any perspective about it performance. The figures below are for the second quarter of 2000 (OK I know it was some time ago I am getting more up to date figure is anyone is interested). Things have changed since then as HP and Compac have merged and lost market share by doing so, current info puts Apple as the third largest computer manufacturer behind Dell and HP/Compac. Not so small at all!! In 2000 Apple had a bigger bite of the market than SONY or TOSHIBA! Just have a look below. If anyone on the list is interested I have a friend who works for one of the big market information houses and I can get figures than will give a better view of market share over the past few years.
