Purely speculation here (based on some rumors), but this could be the 
reason that Apple wants to ditch booting in OS9. Supposedly Apple and 
AMD were supposed to announce a agreement to unlease OSX from the 
PowerPC chipset.  Perhaps the realization that they enforcing a 
January deadline of no OS9 was somewhat suicidal caused them to put 
the announcement on hold.

I don't think Apple will, in the near future, have a version of OSX 
that runs on any Wintel box, but I do think they will be a move away 
from PowerPC because the development of that chipset is just too slow 
for Apple to remain competitive with Wintel.

After all, the G5 is more than a year behind the projected release.
