Because hard drive manufacturers measure capacity using multiples of 1000, while the OS measures capacity using multiples of 1024. This means that 1MB according to the OS is 1048576 bytes. So a 60GB hard disk is 60,000,000,000 bytes (on a perfect disk, but few are perfect, so some companies add a few thousand bytes just in case of flaws on the disk, but the OS will calculate the value as 55.879GB. -- Glenn L.
