My advice below is given believing that you wish to do this for stated
personal use. Heaven forfend it should be for any other purpose...

Download a copy of a very fine piece of shareware called AudioHijack - sorry
don't have their url to hand, but VersionTracker is sure to host. Read the
instructions (you have to launch your player from AudioHijack - it's
straightforward) and you'll be able to record to .aiff anything your
soundcard processes thus keeping it in the digital domain. You can then use
iTunes to convert to .mp3.
