let's pretend i didn't have 25%+ free, meaning unassigned, allocation 
block 'space'... How does un-assigning an address in memory, involve 
'extra' drive space?

maybe you're thinking in terms of copying from drive to drive, or 
between partitions. 'Taking out the trash' is a metaphor. Nothing 
'goes' anywhere.
