PB17" Superdrive and DV Video?

I just burned off a Data DVD of DV video archives and was hoping that 
on powerbook's superdrive, which reads at 8X, would be fast enough to 
handle the 6.8MB/sec data rate of the video.  However it's still pretty 
much unplayable, even if I choose to preload the audio and video.
So I'm curious, what is the read speed, in MB/sec, of a 1X DVD-ROM; 
what about 8X?
