Printer hookup ?

I hooked up my tibook running 10.2.6 to a friends lexmark h-83 (?) 
printer today via its usb connection.
I opened the print center and tried the adding printer button to find 
the lexmark printer but nothing showed up when i tried to use the USB 
setting or any of the other choices.  I was on battery power with the 
tibook if that matters.   The printer was on etc...

What did I miss?
