Stateful Packet Inspection.  As I understand it, this capability in a 
firewall lets it allow things like incoming connections relating to, 
say, an existing FTP connection, that would not normally be allowed 
through by themselves.  I might be over-simplifying it, though (or 
getting it wrong... ;-)
