I've read different info from different sources, and the actual effect may depend on the actual implementation by the equipment manufacturer(s). The info varied from (i) all traffic goes no faster than the slowest, so all goes at 802.11b rates, to (ii) 11g traffic will continue at higher than 11.b rates if .11b client(s) associate with the .11g access point, but those rates will be slower than in an all-.11g WLAN.
