indexing problems

Every once in a while my mail.app will try to index mailboxes.
It will start and then not complete the process, just sitting there 
with the
blue bar (the blue barber pole bar) shimmering.

I hit the stop button and it goes to a solid bar but does not stop.

I have tried using cocktail to do permission maintenance and other
script things, but on restart I get the same results.

suggestions?
