When you empty the trash OS-X will "de-fragment" (optimize) your hard drive. Depending on the size of these files and how full your hard drive is "emptying" the trash can take a relatively long while to complete. Same with when you install new software the last step is optimization and it also de-frags the hard drive. (at least that is what I discovered when I research why could not find a de-frag tool for UNIX OS) The easiest work around for you if you do not want to wait ... Create a new folder on your desktop and copy all of the files that are in your trash to the new folder. Then move some of the files back to the Trash and empty the trash and move more files to the trash and empty AND repeat process until all files have been deleted. Hope that helps ...
