According to <c.buttimer at mdx.ac.uk>: >I'd be very grateful if you would tell me how to use Usenet. Many thanks. > >Colin. Hi Colin, Get a hold of a copy of Thoth. http://www.thothsw.com/ Then go to http://www.giganews.com and get a three-day free trial of their news server subscription. There are no 'strings' or 'catches', it's an honest 3-day, or One Gigabyte trial. The reason to try a 'premium' news server, instead of your ISP's 'feed' is simple: Access to many more groups, longer retention of posted articles [text, audio, video, etc] on the servers, etc] After the 3-day trial, you can sign up gor giganews [that was my choice] or go to http://www.easynews.com and grab their $10 a month plan [but it is 500MB per day, as opposed to my 18 GB a month plan at giganews] There is a learning curve, which I can seriously 'flatten out' for you, or anybody. But basically, you launch the app, and follow the onscreen instructions to set up. 1- First, you'll input the location URL of the news server, and your password. [password is temporary with the free trials] 2- Next, Thoth gets you to set up a folder for its info/etc, you can call it newsgroups [or whatever] in "Documents", 3- Then it'll ask you to create your own group lists. Here, you can go along and create a list called mp3, or music [again, whatever]. 4- Then it automatically downloads the entire list of news groups available through your carrier. here is the critical thing. It takes a few minutes sometimes for the entire list to download. 5- There's a Search 'blank' near the top of the Full group List, type in sounds.mp3 and you'll see a much shorter list of the mp3 groups. 6- Command-Click the groups you want to take a look at, and then click-drag them to the little window that thoth opened for you onscreen when you set up the "mp3' group [#3 above] Let me know, offlist, if you get this far. Setting Thoth's prefs can be tricky for a first-time user, but the process is easy with tips. It's an incredible program. The best on the macintosh platform, and faster and more full-featured than Forte Agent, on the Wintel platform. [although Forte Agent is a killer on the Wintel side, no question]. Hope this helps. trust me, once you get set up, you'll be amazed. ~flipper
