I ran into a similar problem copying off my user area to one of my pc's through the network using DAVE 4.0 It stalled at one point and the mouse was ultra slugish, but no data was coming through. In the end no amount of force quitting the finder was able to fix it. I had to pop the battery out to get the system to restart.
