variable start-up crash

For some reason, the CheckPlugin CRASH on start-up seems to have gone 
away (at least sometimes) - only to be replaced by a "fix_prebinding" 
CRASH, the log of which shows:

I do not know if this is worse than the CheckPlugin crash or not !

One thing I have done (a couple of days ago, so I cannot be sure if 
there is any connection) is to move to GIMP PRINT, after 
un-installing the HP drivers (2.0f) for my DeskJet 950C.
