In a terminal window, at a prompt, enter "man man" and
read what gets shown.

To learn some basics in a gentle way, just to have an idea
what goes on in unix, my own suggestion would be Douglas
Troy _Unix Systems_.  I think the latest edition is like
1990, but for the basics (and unix hasn't changed specially
a lot) it's fine still.
