Running software update or downloading the update from Apple's website will not require you to delete anything after the update is complete. Prior to updating it is a good idea to boot from the OSX CD and when the intaller window is up, go to the menu bar and select Disk Utility. From that app run Disk First Aid. Then quit, which will reboot the computer from the hard disk.
