In the AppleDouble world (pretty much everything other than HFS and HFS+), the resource forks and file meta information is stored in an invisible file with a leading "._" on the file name. The .DS_Store files, on the other hand, are simply the Finder's way of storing its view settings for folders. -- Glenn L.
