as my first UNIX mentor (a wise man of many years' experience) said to 
me:

"Double check every command you type before hitting return. Ask 
yourself ' is this REALLY what I want the system to do?' "

It gets better with time, but even a few years on I make the odd fatal 
error...that's what backups are for I s'pose :)
