some more question about the sleep mode

hi again.
thanks for all those great answer. i also would like
to know that, how would i know if my ti book is in
sleep mode. (will i see the small light on after i
close the lid?) and also while i let it in the sleep
mode, do i need to unplug the power? or it is okay to
leave the power plug in the notebook? 
also i had read about some people burn their keyboard
when they didn't do it right. how would i know if i am
doing it right? because i cannot affort that mistake.
