I have also not been able to find a way to change panes in Mail.app. 
Same thing with Address Book. WHY is Apple programming this way? Hasn't 
the history of Apple OS's & GUI guidelinesn ALWAYS included navigation 
via the keyboard?

VERY frustrating.
