Mac G4s do this with iDVD (there are other applications), but it's in software and doesn't do it in real time. There may be some hardware options that can do this in real time, but I would think they would be in the form of internal boards for the PowerMac G4 towers. I'm not familiar with standalone DVD burners, but if he's interested in archiving his material onto DVD and then doing some editing later, MPEG2 is a lossy format and he will lose quality converting it back to DV for editing.
